Discover Hiba: Our Wellbeing Curriculum

08 Nov 2021

Hiba Nantong is committed to offering a rigorous wellbeing programme which will equip students with the essential tools needed to flourish in the wider world. There is a direct link between wellbeing and high academic standards with strong emotional, social and behavioural engagement correlating with improvements in academic achievements. Helping pupils to understand, explore and take ownership of their personal sense of wellbeing is fundamental to a Hiba education. A calm and happy mind is better equipped to meet life's challenges and ultimately to thrive in school and life beyond.

Hiba Academy Nantong's wellbeing programme will be a significant embodiment of our commitment to providing pastoral care. We aim to cultivate “whole pupils” who we help to become emotionally resilient and contented. Our programme will be taught individually as a separate curriculum area as well as being part of our theme-based lessons with broad areas such as individual development, society, emotions, education, economy and mental health all being covered extensively. All these ideas are closely interconnected and the curriculum allows room for expansion and change to meet the needs of an ever-changing global society.

Individual development

Individual development will cover topics such as understanding your body, maintaining a healthy diet, keeping fit, disease prevention, safety awareness, being reliable, drugs and drug abuse, independence and self-esteem.

Society

Society will encourage pupils to ask questions such as, "how can I become comfortable with my current self?" It will also focus on building and maintaining friendships, internet safety, respect and responsibility for others, role models, environmental protection, philanthropy, integrity, inclusiveness, competence and influence.

Emotions

This portion of the wellbeing curriculum will deal with topics such as identifying and understanding emotions, identifying trigger mechanisms, promoting positive emotions, handling negative emotions, empathy, kindness to oneself and others, tolerance, facing challenges and personal reflection.

Education

Education will teach pupils how to learn, organise and manage their time, think critically, cooperate with others and share ideas. Pupils will also learn how to express themselves and raise questions.

Economy

This area will cover the themes of making positive choices, roles and responsibilities, careers, financial literacy, entrepreneurship and social justice.

Mental health

Pupils will learn about mindfulness, resilience, asking for help and helping others.

Each theme will be reviewed and updated annually by a dedicated wellbeing team so that your child’s journey and wellbeing uniquely match any current developments and needs as they progress through the school. Course content for each grade will be age-appropriate, increasing in complexity as our pupils grow and mature.

We will prepare appropriate and engaging activities and teaching methods, such as concept induction, case studies and analysis and scenario demonstration. Additionally, pupils will share what they have learned through role playing exercises, essays and more. These activities are designed to help our pupils think deeply about themselves and their relationships to others.

Unlocking My Potential

Entering a fully bilingual environment is a challenge for anyone, never mind a young child who is still learning their native tongue. This programme is therefore intended for grade 1 and 2 pupils.

Pupils will be divided into small groups to share the feelings and emotions they may be reluctant to discuss in a larger whole-class environment.  With a focus on building confidence, they will share opinions and even help each other to translate and articulate their thoughts into English.

Through role-play activities and paired presentations, pupils will also learn how to cooperate with their peers and to speak confidently in public.

Steps to Success

Our 'Steps to Success' programme is designed for our upper primary pupils. As life's pressures and responsibilities increase, these young minds can often struggle to cope with the changes happening in the world around them.

Together, we will examine practical ways to cope with stress, learning how to see things as a challenge rather than a chore.

In lessons we will explore a number of questions, such as: "what things in my life can I control?" or "how can I learn to cope with these events in a positive, mature and independent way?"

We will also examine how simple things like organising and prioritising tasks can have an impact on overall mental health, help to alleviate anxiety and promote positive thinking.

Taking responsibility for our actions is an essential value. We will explore the impact and consequences of our choices and the consequences they generate.

Every Hiba staff member will be a practitioner and communicator of our wellbeing principals, regardless of their position. We will attentively observe pupils, helping them apply what they learn, promoting the Hiba Identity of being Inspired, Intellectual, Independent, Individual and Inclusive and the Hiba Values of Courage, Kindness, Integrity, Respect and Responsibility.  Parents will also be expected to set an example outside of school as they inspire their children to apply to everyday life what they learn in our wellbeing curriculum.
