“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire”
From the poet William Butler Yeats
A well-rounded pupil is a successful pupil, and at Hiba Academy Nantong, pupils will be encouraged to discover their interests and pursue them with passion. Central to this will be our co-curricular activities (CCAs) programme that offers a diverse range of enriching activities outside of the classroom.
Providing Diversified and
Plentiful CCA Programmes
Hiba CCAs mainly offers three categories: art & culture, academic and sports.
Art & Culture CCAs will include violin, Chinese orchestra, orchestra, music drama, Chinese dance, drama, traditional art, art appreciation and much more. Each programme helps to cultivate an appreciate of humanity's diverse cultural heritage as they develop skills and build confidence.
Academic CCAs will include activities such as English reading, debating, sinology, storytelling, Model United Nations, small language courses and more. They will stimulate in our pupils an enthusiasm for learning and facilitate academic progress.
Sporting CCAs will include gymnastics, cricket, tennis, kung fu, self-defence, football, basketball, swimming, fencing, rugby, golf and more. They will help pupils improve teamwork, sportsmanship, resilience and self-confidence.
Based on their own interests and strengths, each pupil chooses different activities to explore. In this way, CCAs gives them more opportunities to try new things, tap into their potential and discover their passions. We believe that through our CCA programme, pupils learn more about their own interests, develop their potential and have the opportunity to excel themselves.
(Specific CCAs courses will be adjusted according to the actual situation and subject to the final notice of the school)
Putting the Hiba Values
into Practice
Hiba applies its Values of Courage, Respect, Integrity, Kindness and Responsibility into all it does and our CCAs are no exception.
In one CCA, you may find pupils writing code to operate Lego robots. But in addition to building programming skills, they learn to communicate and collaborate with mutual Respect.
Pupils in the lower grades who take our handicrafts relish in learning new crafts like origami, and they help one another as they build skills. It is an opportunity to put Kindness into practice
In the debate club CCA, pupils learn how to build a logical argument, deliver a powerful opening statement, and make progressive points.
We also hold two concerts annually as a closing ceremony for our music and performing arts activities. Every pupil takes to the stage with immense Courage.
The Shanghai sister Hiba Debate Team were outstanding competitors at this year’s Shanghai Chen Hui Cup, making it to the final and going to win the championship. Making this feat all the more impressive was the fact that they were the only Junior High School team to compete in a tournament for High School pupils. Soon after, in the National Chinese Language Debate Championship, the Hiba Debate Team ultimately gained first and third place in the tournament! The judges offered glowing reviews, saying “The Hiba team exhibited a natural frankness and a capacity for carefully considering problems and thinking quickly and independently.” Bernice, who won the best debater, described the key to winning this way: “This momentous victory came from months of hard work and dedication, from mental training in the classroom to practising our skills in the Debate CCA.”
We also hold two concerts annually as a closing ceremony for our music and performing arts activities. Every pupil takes to the stage with immense Courage.
CCAs are an integral part of our curriculum, giving our pupils rich opportunities to experience, explore and feel the meaning and influence of the Hiba Values and subsequently live up to them.
Enriching Courses
One difficulty with any CCA programme is trying to balance the continuity of certain activities with the introduction of new and exciting ones. It is our mission to create a truly diverse programme, but also to have certain activities running year after year in order to build on what has gone before. We aim to offer our pupils more new experiences, helping them mine their potential and extend themselves beyond their comfort zones. This is why we will update our CCA programme annually and always encourage our pupils to try something new every term. However, you should also be able to find the ‘old favourites’ available each and every term.
Although we have diversified and plentiful activities, we will not demand that our pupils master all of them. Instead, we hope to light a path and provide possibilities for them, enabling them to discover their own potential, interests and their motivation to find their best way forward. Meanwhile, CCAs also are the embodiment of Hiba holistic education philosophy, expecting pupils to gain more personal value, positive quality in the process of growth and constantly seek and build a better Hiba Pupils, to make better preparation for the study, growth and life planning in the future.
