Hiba Academy Nantong aspires to create a caring, bilingual community that develops well-rounded individuals with strong values and the skills to thrive within an ever-changing global society.
We believe that a good school vision and educational philosophy needs a first-class teaching team implement it. Due to our good reputation, Hiba Academy Nantong has attracted many excellent teachers to join us, and a team of high-quality Chinese and foreign teachers has been assembled. We will introduce our teaching team to you one-by-one. Today, let us first meet the following three teachers:
Sheilla Xia
Deputy Head of Primary
Sheilla started her teaching career in Hong Kong ten years ago. She has rich experience in both bilingual and international school curricula. She also holds various workshops among international schools. Before joining Hiba School, she served at the English Schools Foundation, the largest English-medium international school organization in Hong Kong. Her educational credentials include a master’s degree in teaching Chinese as a foreign language (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University), bachelor’s degree in Chinese Language and Literature (Qingdao University), teaching certificates in both People's Republic of China and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, as well as School Leadership Certificate from Harvard University.
Sheilla loves engaging pupils, staff and parents to build strong school communities. As a ‘sportaholic’, she loves volleyball, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and running. She is enthusiastic to be one of the founding members in Hiba Academy Nantong.
Michelle Lu
Teacher ambassador
Michelle was born in Nantong, She has been working at Wellington College International Shanghai for almost 5 years. During the time, she has expanded her teaching ability in English and looks forward to bringing an excellent bilingual learning environment to Hiba Nantong.
She loves to spend her time walking along the riverbank with her family and dog. She has always used her spare time to do interesting activities and travel around the world. She was a volunteer for the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, which was an amazing experience for her to meet so many young talented athletes and it helped her appreciate everyone’s challenging work. Being a teacher enriches her life: she learns from pupils as much as she teaches them, and it makes her happy to communicate with pupils who have so many wonderful ideas.
Shane Maher
Teacher ambassador
Shane comes from the Republic of Ireland, a small country of about five million people on the western edge of Europe. He grew up in the countryside, on a dairy and beef farm, in a large family of nine people. He holds a B.A. degree in English and Media Studies, two M.A degrees (in Philosophy & Literature and in Educational Leadership) and his teaching Higher Diploma is from Trinity College, Dublin (one of the oldest universities in the western world, founded in 1592). He began teaching in 2004 and has taught English language and literature in Ireland, the United Arab Emirates and in China with Hiba Academy Shanghai since 2019. He has also taught French, philosophy and well-being. In addition, he has worked with various universities as a research assistant and Media tutor.
He loves to read, watch movies and exercise but his passion is the sport of rugby. He played for a short time and became an age-group coach with his son’s club, Abu Dhabi Harlequins. He has also brought tag rugby to Hiba Academy Shanghai which has proved extremely popular. He looks forward to introducing this sport to Hiba Academy Nantong in the coming year.
His role in the school will be as an English teacher and he is also acting as one of the Teacher Ambassadors for the school, to assist new teachers in coming to understand the Hiba ethos and vision. He is passionate about pastoral care also and he hopes, in time, to foster the amazing Hiba values in our Nantong pupils, to develop young men and women who become ‘Inspired, Intellectual, Independent, Individual and Inclusive’.
On 26th May, we will also invite the above three teachers to "Hiba Talks" to hear their views on bilingual education.
