How time flies! This particularly hot summer vacation has been approaching the end, and pupils are about to embrace a new chapter of their lives. Especially the pupils who will be entering the Early Years 1 and the Grade 1 of primary school, are full of curiosity and excitement about the campus and their classes. At the beginning of the school year, we wanted to post a special message from Sheilla Xia, Deputy Head of Primary, and May Xue, Chinese Co-Head of Early Years, to help the pupils welcome the first day of the school year.
Deputy Head of Primary
Sheilla Xia
Dear all,
Welcome to Hiba Academy Nantong!
I am Sheilla Xia, the Deputy Head of primary school. Like many of you who joined this lovely school from other cities, my family has just relocated to Nantong from Hong Kong in mid-July. I am still practising my navigation skills with my husband as we often drive downtown to go grocery shopping.
I hope you had a lovely summer and a well-deserved rest. Thank you so much for your trust in Hiba Academy Nantong and I am so thrilled to see pupils joining in all year groups.
As a newly established school, Hiba Academy Nantong is full of passion and ambition to become one of the best bilingual schools in China. I am so proud to have our founding families and colleagues start such an exciting journey.
I would like to share some particular words to our Grade 1 pupils:
You will probably feel astonished by the vast campus and many new people. Do not panic. Please consider this as a fun exploration on:
How the school functions differently from your nursery?
How mathematics teaches you to calculate and measure?
How Chinese and English lessons take you into a magical world of language and literature?
How fun it is to dive into sports, arts, library, and musical activities!
For older boys and girls in Grade 2 to Grade 6, you have been in primary school for a few years; but I am sure you will find Hiba Academy Nantong so unique from any other schools you have attended. Besides further developing your academics, I will encourage you to fully engage in sports, art, and musical activities to find where your passion lies. Wellington College has a long tradition of sporting excellence. You will see brotherhood and sisterhood sprout in sports fields and grow strong. A friendship born on the field of competition is priceless. Awards may be forgotten, but friendship lasts forever in your memory.
Next, the parent handbook has plenty of information for family reference. However, I still would like to highlight some essential points to parents:
Masks: Please put one clean mask in your child’s school bag.
Water bottle: Pupils need to bring their bottles of water each day.
Dress code: Please strictly follow the uniform dressing guide. Pupils are required to take their PE uniforms and sports shoes on the days when PE lessons are scheduled. Hats are necessary to give protection from the sun.
Pencil case: Grade 1- Grade 3 pupils do not have to bring their pencil case; teachers will provide stationery. Pupils in Grades 4 - 6 may bring their own stationery, including safety scissors, but no knives are allowed at school.
Please label your child's belongings clearly with his/her name in both Chinese and English.
I am looking forward to supporting everyone to make a positive start for the children. Enjoy the final few days of the summer break.
Chinese Co-Head of Early Years
May Xue
Dear pupils and parents,
I hope you all are well! The cicadas in summer are gradually fading away, and the day when children step into the campus is getting closer. Walking into the bright nursery, we are looking forward to the vitality and vigour brought by your children. Of course, there may also be some worries about children entering a new environment, but the new semester is a very exciting time for many children, and it may be a moment for other children to need support.
To support children to transition into a new environment as soon as possible, we need family cooperation. We would be grateful if you could:
if a child has a soothing toy, we can discuss with the child in a role play: the beloved toy will go to school with him / her soon, and how we can support the toy.
through the combination of imaginative activities and picture books, we can guide the children to be prepared with more feelings to understand why and how to deal with "temporary separation from close family member".

Each child has their own way of expressing feelings and coping with difficulties. Therefore, when they face changes in a new environment, the time for adaptation is different. Understanding this can help us accept children's changes in the adjustment period in a more inclusive way.
Finally, when we are worried about how to ease the anxiety of children, we should not forget to care about ourselves as parents. Please stick to and enjoy your hobbies and time and try to accept different emotions with an open attitude. We are an important part of the emotional environment in which children live. We will be role models for children on how to face changes and feelings. Our Hiba journey is about to begin. Let's get ready to start...
