Last week, we introduced the house system to the school. As described, pupils are engaged in a variety of activities as a house member in their daily school lives.Recently, pupils had their first exciting house event! All house members gave their best efforts to compete for their own house. The atmosphere was tense and competitive but also a lot of fun.
Pupils and teachers from the four houses Hui, Xian, Li and De were dressed in their own colours and lined up in the sports hall. The visual clash of the four colours reflected the competitive atmosphere, which seemed to be ignited by all the house members.
Across the pond
The first house event demonstrated unity and cooperation. All members of a team on the first mat skip onto the second mat, then the last member lifts the first mat and passes it onwards, the team reaching the finish line first is the winner.
Pass it on
Each house pass the hula hoop and balls from front to back using only their feet, and then the fastest team wins. In this game, pupils had some difficulties when passing the hula hoop and balls due to different heights of the team members. We were pleased to see that the taller pupils took the initiative to adjust their passing position and successfully completed the pass with their teammates. By always thinking of others, pupils demonstrate the value of 'kindness' in this game.
Guarding the “Backyard”
Each house was allocated their own “backyard”. They guard it by preventing balls from falling into the backyard. Members of each house ran freely and protected their own area while throwing with all their strength into the competitor’s area. Each movement in the game touched the nerves of the other house members off the court. They cheered for the good shots and defence. The competitive atmosphere accompanied by the loud shouts spread from the sports hall and reached every corner of the campus.
At the end of the event, Ms Mulholland, Head of Pastoral Care and Boarding, encouraged all pupils to promote the Hiba values in their daily behaviour and academic performance in the future, to fully demonstrate the Hiba identities and earn the honours for their own houses.
The aim of this first event was to create a positive house spirit, enhance the pupils’ sense of house identity and bring them lifetime memories. The success of the first house event laid a good foundation for other house events afterwards. The school will hold more meaningful house events in the future to enhance students' sense of belonging and honour as a m ember of their own house and the school as well.
