At Hiba Academy Nantong, education is about more than learning; it’s a journey of personal discovery. Today, we hear from Grade 10 pupil Jayden. He believes that our holistic approach to education has helped him to realise his potential every step of the way.
Academic Inspiration and
Cultural Exchange
Jayden’s time at Hiba has given him a real sense of what makes our school unique. His previous schools, he explains, didn’t place the same emphasis on independent thinking and cross-cultural understanding. He recalls science lessons, for instance, in which teachers encouraged pupils to design their own experiments, collect data and present their findings. They didn’t just follow the textbook. It was a hands-on approach that helped him build confidence in his ability to explore new ideas.
Just as important for Jayden has been the school’s diverse community. He has had the chance to share the traditions of Chinese festivals like Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival with classmates from around the world. He has likewise learned about different cultures from annual events like our United Nations Day and International Food Festival.
Building Confidence
Through Bilingual Learning
Starting at Hiba was a real challenge for Jayden, especially when it came to learning English. Simple conversations with teachers made him anxious. But our immersive language environment quickly helped him gain his confidence. In the classroom, teachers guided him through lively discussions and encouraged him to take part. Outside lessons, assemblies, clubs and house competitions made learning English feel dynamic and engaging.
Now, Jayden speaks comfortably with his teachers and can analyse and explain ideas in both languages. He now feels at home in any international setting as well.
Critical Thinking and
Research Skills
Jayden’s academic progress goes far beyond language. He has flourished with our rigorous curriculum and strong support system. Our library has become a favourite resource, while our science labs have provided plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning. One-on-one tutoring has also made a real difference.
He’s especially grateful to his form tutor, Mr Fessehaye, whose enthusiasm and creative teaching have helped Jayden see language as much more than just a way to communicate; it’s a bridge to new ideas and connections. Now, as he starts thinking about university, his university counsellor is helping him to draw a clear roadmap for his future.
Self-Reliance, Social Skills
and Leadership
Choosing to board was a turning point for Jayden. He has since become more independent, learning to manage his time and work with others as a team. Weekly dorm competitions – where he and his roommates work together – have even seen them regularly come out on top.
Boarding has also given Jayden the chance to try new things. In the evenings, he can practise the piano, play badminton or even create his own vlog, from script to edit. These activities have made life outside the classroom truly rewarding. The boarding staff, who look after day-to-day needs, also run clubs and themed events, helping Jayden discover new interests.
Along the way, he has also come out of his shell and applied to become a pupil boarding coordinator, acting as a link between pupils and staff. The role has strengthened his communication skills and deepened his sense of responsibility.
Jayden’s story is living proof of the Hiba difference, a blend of academic discovery and personal growth, where every pupil can forge their own path. From the classroom to the boarding house, from local traditions to international experiences, our pupils push boundaries, follow their aspirations and grow into their best selves.
