To many, the word ‘ambition’ can have a sharp edge. But for Filipe, turning passion into purpose required more than raw drive. This summer, he concluded his Secondary School education with offers from the University of Edinburgh, the University of Melbourne, the University of Warwick and he received a full scholarship from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. At every critical juncture, Hiba Academy Nantong provided the support, trust and structure that shaped his future.

Life Lessons Learned on the Pitch

Some may see sport as a leisurely diversion. At Hiba, it’s integral to a holistic education. Thanks to our world-class facilities and structured competition through school teams and tournaments, Filipe was able to channel his talent into something more. Honing his talents taught him the value of grit, discipline and hard work. Playing on a team taught him how to handle success and failure, to respect competitors and to work within the rules.

These lessons carried over. The resilience and focus he learned on the pitch enabled him to manage A Level pressures with confidence, grounding his ambition with maturity.

When the Numbers Added Up

Filipe has always been drawn to numbers. He first encountered the stock market as a child with his father, though back then, the figures flashing on the stock tickers meant little to him.

Revisiting finance later with a solid mathematical foundation, he saw a much larger narrative: how individual decisions could leverage global economic shifts. The connection between micro-calculations and macro-effects captured his interest immediately.

Recognising his passion, Hiba Academy provided platforms to explore beyond the classroom. With the school's support, he participated in high-level competitions, including the Columbia University Global Mock Entrepreneurship Competition. These practical experiences helped him deconstruct theory and built a strong foundation for university applications.

His sharp mathematical mind, however, created a hurdle when writing personal statements. Accustomed to dealing with numbers, he found writing at length a challenge. This was where Hiba Academy's personalised university counselling excelled. Rather than offering generic templates, his counsellor, Ms Vera, used deep discussions to help him piece together his personal growth and clarify his core motivations.

Boarding: A Laboratory for Leadership

Sport taught Filipe resilience, and academics taught him intellectual rigour. But boarding and serving as Head Boy taught him independence and responsibility.

Joining Hiba’s boarding house in 2024 was like starting university early. Living away from his parents meant managing daily life and relationships independently, with guidance from school mentors when needed. Studying alongside peers in the Sixth Form Centre created a supportive environment that made the challenge manageable.

Serving as Head Boy sharpened his leadership further. Representing the school, mentoring younger pupils and managing significant projects showed him what responsibility actually means. These experiences transformed him from a high-achieving pupil into someone ready to lead.

At Hiba Academy Nantong, Filipe's ambition found solid support. The school refined his raw drive into the skills needed for the adult world.
